While dredging for scallops causes extreme damage to the sea floor and huge loss of life for other species, hand diving is the most sustainable way to harvest scallops.
The fishermen dive down to the seafloor and gather the shells by hand. They do not damage or disrupt the eco system of the sea floor and any undersized scallops are thrown back into the sea to live another day.
